Sirens Added to UMHB Emergency Notification System

09/24/08

Belton, Texas - Two emergency sirens will be installed next week at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor campus as part of the continued effort by the university to enhance their emergency notification system.

According to Gary Sargent, university police chief, the new equipment will be installed Monday in strategic locations on campus and will be tested periodically throughout the week.

"We will be conducting tests of the new system on Monday through Friday to make sure all the components are working properly," said Sargent. "We want to be sure the surrounding community is aware that we are simply conducting tests throughout the week."

The sirens will be placed at the front of campus at the 10th and College intersection and at the intramural fields close to the Mayborn Campus Center. The sirens will sound with one single long tone to signify "shelter in place."

"The new sirens will be used in conjunction with other emergency notification systems, and will only be sounded when there is a need for everyone on campus to take shelter immediately where they are located," said Sargent.

Other emergency notification measures already in place at the university include instant text-messaging, phone voice messaging, campus-wide emails to all student, parents and employees.
