MSIS FAQs

When is the deadline to apply for admission to the MSIS program?

Students are accepted for the fall, spring, or summer semester. Although there is no deadline for admission, candidates are encouraged to apply at least the semester before they wish to enter the program.

What is the likelihood that I will be accepted if I do not have the required 3.0 GPA?

A minimum undergraduate 3.0 GPA is required for regular admission. Students with more than five years of professional work experience lacking a 3.0 undergraduate GPA will be considered on a case-by-case basis after interviewing with the program director. Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree from a 4-year regionally accredited college/university.See the Admissions section of this catalog for admission application procedures and costs.

If I do not have an undergraduate computer related degree, what can I do to get accepted into the program?

Although an information systems or computer science degree is usually preferred for entry into the program, a minor in information systems or computer science is acceptable with approval of the program director.

Will someone help me decide what classes to take in the MSIS program?

The MSIS Director will work with you as your advisor.

What types of assistantships are available?

One assistantship is awarded each academic year. Applications are required. The assistant will be awarded by the Graduate MSIS faculty based upon qualifications and merit.

What is your average class size?

The average class size is 25 students.

Do I need to take the GRE or GMAT before being admitted to the program?

No, the GRE and/or GMAT are not required for entrance to the MSIS program.

Who teaches the courses in the program?

All faculty who teach, hold terminal degrees in their field, and industry experience in their field.

When are the classes offered?

All courses are offered in 8-week sessions at night. Most are offered one night a week for 3.5 hours.

Can I continue to work and complete my degree in a reasonable time?

Yes, the MSIS is designed for the working professional and is offered as a part-time degree which can be finished in two years including the summer sessions. A student has up to 5 years to complete the degree.

How many credit hours are required to complete the MSIS?

In all, 36 credit hours.

How many credit hours should and International student should take without affecting my status?

An international student is required to take a minimum of 9 credit hour status to maintain the full-time F1 status.

What is the maximum number of courses a student can take in one semester?

It depends on availability of professors and courses. MSIS director will advise all the students before the registration.

Are there any international groups focusing on students?

Yes, there are many international students groups. We have UMHB Cross- Cultural Cru, Indian Students Association who conduct great events on campus. Follow them on Facebook.
